A former Fort Hood soldier said retail giant Kay Jewelers gave him the wrong engagement ring three years ago.

Ray Rodriguez said back in May 2013 he bought his wife Analyn's $1,500 Tolkowsky engagement ring from Kay Jewelers in the Killeen Mall. It's value was certified, with a serial number engraved on the stone.

Rodriguez also had it re-sized immediately to fit his wife's hand.

Since then, the two retired and moved to San Antonio. When they decided to upgrade their ring, the sales associate told them some bad news.

The sales associate at a Kay's location in San Antonio told them that the ring wasn't the same one they bought. It was the same dimensions, but there was no serial number and it was worth a fraction of what they paid.

The couple believed the original $1,500 ring was switched with the cheaper, $300 ring, when they had it re-sized in Killeen.

"She took it really hard," Rodriguez said. "She got really upset. I saw the hurt in her eyes and I was just very disappointed in myself because I feel I should have been more knowledgeable about diamonds."

Rodriguez said he called Kay's Corporate several times and even filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.

He claimed the company said all they could do was refund them $300, the value of their current ring.

The Kay Jeweler's Facebook page is flooded with complaints from customers who claim they got back broken of different rings whenever they sent them off to get re-sized.

The company posted on its page that it is currently looking into the recent complaints.

"I don't wish any other soldiers to be put in this situation and you know you're spending $1,500 on a certified ring just to be given a $300 ring," Rodriguez said.

News Channel 25 reached out to the Kay Jeweler's public relations office and have not received a call back as of 6:30 p.m. Monday.
