On Tuesday, the Waco city council issued a proclamation declaring May 15 of 2016 as the 100th Anniversary of the lynching of Jesse Washington.

Mayor Malcolm Duncan presented the proclamation to a group that prepared a memorial service for that date.

“As leaders of a progressive city, we accept responsibility to give voice to the countless Waco residents, past and present, who have struggled under the burden of injustice. We profoundly regret and condemn any instance where a citizen of Waco has not received equal protection under the law,” the proclamation stated.

A memorial service is scheduled for May 15th at 2 p.m. at Bledsoe Miller Recreation Center.
