Three McLennan Community College students are facing criminal charges after stealing dinosaur bones and fragments while on a field trip.

According to McLennan Community College, three students and two sponsors snuck off of the approved excavation site at Hanksville-Burpee Dinosaur Quarry in Utah.

School officials said they were contacted by the Department of Interior in Aug. 2015, informing them members of the group were under investigation.

In an over the phone statement from College President, Dr. Johnette McKown, said the school fully cooperated with the investigation. Dr. McKown also wanted to make clear, the two sponsors were not professors or staff for the College.

“It’s unfortunate that a few people, chose to break the rules.” McKown said.

Charges for the five include theft and trespassing.
