An attempted car burglar is behind bars after a witness opened fire in a Walmart parking lot Sunday.

Bellmead police say a man confronted a suspected burglar, who is accused of stealing tools from a truck in the parking lot. The witness approached the suspect and told them the cops had been called. Authorities say that's when the suspect became threatening and jumped into his pickup. As he was backing up, the witness fired one shot into the back of the truck.

He told police he feared the suspect was going to run him over. The suspect, who wasn't hit by the bullet, ran inside Walmart to get away from the shooter.

The shooter was released after police determined he had a concealed carry license. The suspected burglar has been charged with burglary and assault with a deadly weapon.
