McLennan County Commissioners approved creating an associate judge position to help move court cases faster.
The person holding the position would earn $118,500, which is 70 percent of a district judge's salary.
The judge will be able to preside over hearings and trials at four district courts and two courts at law.
Currently, a visiting judge comes to Waco, if the other judges are not available. With the new position, a visiting judge will not be needed.
County Judge Scott Felton said the change can also benefit taxpayers.
"If we can move the docket faster and have fewer numbers of people waiting in jail for trials and hearings, then that is money that we would save," Felton said.
The associate judge will start as early as next week.
