Ronnie Hughes pleads guilty to manslaughter

WACO - An Axtell school employee accused of killing his ex-wife in January 2007 pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter Monday morning with a suggested sentence of 20 years in prison.

Jury selection was about to begin when the plea was made.

In January 2008, a grand jury indicted Ronnie Hughes in the murder of Lana Hughes. If convicted, Hughes would have faced life in prison.

The day of the murder Ronnie was at his ex-wife Lana Hughes' house in Elk near Axtell, according to the arrest affidavit. Ronnie asked Lana who had been calling her and she told him it wasn't any of his business anymore. Ronnie then allegedly got a 22-caliber pistol from between the mattresses and shot Lana in the chest.

Hughes says he didn't mean to kill his ex-wife, that her death was an accident.
