Energy Effects: Winners and Losers

Energy Effects: Is your car worthless or are you driving a gold mine?

WACO - High gas prices are changing the way we drive.  Not only are people driving less but they're changing what they drive as well.

"I spend $600 dollars a month," said Jennifer Crumbley of Robinson who drives both a large SUV and truck.

Sylvia Aroyo said her family's truck eats at least $100 a week in gas.

"We have to budget and limit ourselves on other things.  In order to put gas in our car.  We have to drive the smaller car instead of the truck," added Arroyo.

As gas prices are creping nearer to the $4 mark by the day both these Central Texas moms have one thing in common; they're both looking to trade in their gas guzzlers for something more fuel efficient.

Jim Hamilton of Greg May Honda in Waco explained his fuel efficient cars like the Honda Civic and Honda Fit are no longer on the lot.  In fact, they were sold even before hitting the lot.

"The next eight Civics I have are already gone," added Hamilton, "Sold sight unseen."

Hamilton, a three year veteran at Greg May Honda is seeing a change in the car buying business.

"I'm talking about big cowboys people with big trucks,  three ton trucks leaving in Civics."

The more popular and better known Toyota Prius was also difficult to track down. In fact, all the Toyota dealers in Killeen  Waco and Temple were sold out and the wait list as of this week was eight months long.

The wait was worth it for one Prius owner from Georgia, who shells out about $40.00 a month for gas.

So who are the winners?  Anyone who drives a small car or hybrid.

Like Curtis Macklemore of Hewitt who drives a Ford Escape Hybrid, "It's the only car we drive," he said.

But for the losers,  their cars are almose useless, "I have a truck that we don't drive anymore," Macklemore added.

Anyone looking to trade in a truck or SUV will discover the rapidly declining value of their trade in!

"We have people who get mad at us because they think we're stealing their trade, but their SUV isn't worth it," Hamilton Explained
