Stroke Awareness

Strokes are the 3rd leading cause of death in the U.S.  About 700,000 cases occur each year.  The effects of a stroke can be is important that when you recognize the signs and symptoms of a stroke, you act FAST:

F     Facial Drooping
A     Arm weakness or sudden loss of use
S     Slurred speech or inability to speak
T     Time symptoms started

Strokes are time sensitive. From the moment you experience the first symptom, don't wait for another symptom to develop...Call 911!

Risk factors include hypertension, diabetes, cholesterol, age (older than 65), and tobacco and drug use.  Lifestyle modifications are the best way to prevent a stroke.  Diet and exercise help lower blood pressure and refraining from drug and tobacco use can also reduce the risk of a stroke.
