Local Cemetery Bulldozed Over

By Eric Gemmell

MCLENNAN COUNTY - Residents of West were concerned over the recent activity at the Bold Spring Cemetery and now cemetery that was lost for almost a century has been bulldozed.

News Channel 25 discovered that the plot in question was never part of the Bold Spring Cemetery, in fact according to historical records retrieved by local historians, the plot was originally the Bold Spring Black Cemetery.

Records indicated the last official burial was back in 1935.  After decades of neglect, the area succumbed to the forces of nature.

"There were literally thousands of trees and brush.  You literally couldn't walk in that section," said cemetery sexton, Robert Payne.

Bold Spring Cemetery Association bulldozed the area as early as last week to clean up the area, identifying a few remaining gravestones to be preserved.

"Our plan is to never use that section.  We don't know where graves are, there are a lot of unmarked graves," Payne added.

The association added their plans were not meant to offend any residents but to clean the site up.  Additionally, they plan on erecting a stone memorial in the historical cemetery.
