Several organizations are joining together to save 16 horses that will be used for the festival.

According to the Humane Society of Louisiana, horses are leased and purchased to different parade krewes from horse brokers. If the horses were not rehomed after the parade, some would be sold back to the broker or sold to slaughter farms.

The Humane Society of Louisiana and Cascade Stables have partnered for three years to bring these horses with uncertain futures to their forever homes through their Mardi Gras Horse Adoption Program. 32 horses have been saved in the past two years.
