Special time was set aside Thursday to honor the more than 105,000 veterans who are cared for each day by the Department of Veteran Affairs.

Temple Mayor Tim Davis read a proclamation declaring Feb. 14, 2019, as Salute to Hospitalized Veterans Day in Temple.

"Valentine's Day is a special day to pay tribute and express our appreciation to each and every U.S. veteran who is cared for every day in the Department of Veteran Affairs medical centers, outpatient clinics, domiciliaries and nursing homes," said Davis to the amphitheater of people.

Even Miss Texas 2018 Madison Fuller stopped by to pay tribute to the veterans.

"Today is a day to look veterans in the eyes and thank them for their service, shake their hand, thank them for what they have done for our country," said Fuller.

The local Salute to Veteran Patients kicked off with a program at the Waco VA followed by a program at the Temple VA.
