City council leaders in Temple voted in favor of keeping a curfew for minors.

Anyone 17 years old or younger found disobeying the curfew can be fined up to $500 for breaking the ordinance.

Since 1994, teens and children must abide an 11 p.m. curfew on weekdays, and midnight on weekends. This is a tool police have at their disposal for chronic offenders who are disrupting the peace.

“Typically if someone is out after 11 o’clock, if a juvenile is out after 11 o’clock, they could possibly be up to no good,” said Mayor Tim Davis.

But there are a number of exceptions.

“If the child is at a job, or coming back from a school function, the officer will have discretion as to whether or not to write a ticket,” said Davis.
