The life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was celebrated throughout the nation. Many communities maintain their own traditions on this day, in tribute of the social justice warrior.

Copperas Cove commemorates King’s legacy annually through a unity march and service.

Anne McMullen’s husband started the event 21 years ago. While he has passed, she keeps the mission going strong.

“In our communities today, we can do better. We can help one another. So, we still doing that today. Sometimes we’re mistreated. We don’t know how to get along with others. But, it’s OK. Dr. Martin Luther King showed us a better way,” said McMullen.

Pastor Will Jackson, of Bible Way Missionary Baptist Church, carries on the tradition by organizing the march and services.

“When I succeeded him as pastor of the church was a promise that we keep this march going. Growing up in Copperas Cove, I think it’s important for the city of Copperas Cove that we have our own commemoration for it to continue,” said Jackson.

One of the primary focuses includes teaching King’s lessons to youth.

“What better way to leave a legacy, than to have it be birthed in your own children, and the children of our community,” said Jackson.

Dozens of children and teens joined the march on Monday.

“I feel like we’ve come a long way, through this world, because they were segregated, now, we’re able to come together, mixed races, and celebrate him,” said Niya Thompson, 12-year-old who attended the event.
