Luis Tamariz is stationed at Fort Hood with First Army.

"I'm a MIOCT we're responsible for training and certifying any National Guard Reserve unit that gets mobilized or deployed," said Tamariz.

He says he plans to enter a similar field once he leaves the army.

"Specifically looking for Lean Six Sigma. It's like a managerial leadership credential that I think will translate well when I get out of the army," said Tamariz.

In order to help soldiers like Tamariz gain credentials in their perspective field, Fort Hood's Education Center hosted its first-ever Credentialing Assistance Fair on Thursday.

"We realized that we need to do more for our soldiers and so that lead to the evolution of the Credential Assistance Program which helps our soldiers earn civilian recognized certifications in a wide variety of disciplines," said Mike Egen, Fort Hood Education Services officer.

"Basically it's free of cost. There's a lot of schools here that offer it. I'd like to do it now, so that as soon as I get out of the military. If I retire, transition out, I can hit the ground running," said Tamariz.

Those involved say they hope the program will add to the professionalism of the army.

"It's also going to showcase the capabilities of our soldiers," said Egen.
