Temple firefighters responded to a fire on Thursday.

According to Temple Fire and Rescue, the reported fire was at the Courtyard Apartments on South 1st Street. When firefighters arrived at 5 a.m., they found apartment residents safety outside of the building.

Working smoke alarms notified the residents on the second-floor apartment of the fire. A fire suppression sprinkler system is credited with limiting fire damage to the apartment building.

Officials said the fire started in the bathroom from a malfunctioning exhaust fan. Fire damage was limited to the bathroom with the upstairs apartment receiving smoke and water damage.

Two units below, on the first floor, suffered water damage.

There were seven people displaced from the fire, and the apartment complex is providing housing for the displaced people. There were no injuries.

All units were cleared at 6:11 a.m.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, properly maintained home fire sprinklers can save lives and property from a fire. They respond quickly and effectively to fires and often extinguish the fire before a fire department arrives.
