Copperas Cove students took the top prize in Greater Fort Hood Area Recycle Bowl Competition. The student council at Clements Parsons Elementary School recycled 6,000 pounds of materials to land the award.

The students collected discarded papers and other materials, otherwise destined for the landfill. They weighed the recyclables before sorting them into the proper bins.

“Keeping our earth clean is important so that way we can breathe in good air and keep our earth clean as long as we can,” said Billy White, a student.

Advisers say students are taking the lesson to heart.

“If everybody makes the smart choices and we teach them, and they learn, then maybe the world can become a better place one day,” said Lily Moras.

The students won $200 and they say the money will be set aside for a masquerade dance.
