QUINLAN, TX (CBSDFW) - A sheriff’s department is investigating the death of a 4-year-old service dog in Hunt County.

According to CBSDFW, a teenager is heartbroken after her golden retriever, Journey, was shot and killed.

Journey was trained to detect the smell when Hannah Westmoreland’s blood sugar was low. The town raised $20,000 to get a service dog for the girl with diabetes, who is now 15.

For four years, Journey has been by Hannah’s side ready to alert her.

On Sunday, Journey was let out for a quick dip in the pond, a daily routine, when someone shot the dog while the family was inside.

Journey died despite the efforts by a vet clinic to save him. The vet did preserve the bullet removed from the dog.

There is a Justice4Journey Facebook page for messages, tips or a place for someone to help fund a reward.
