College-bound students are in crunch time to get out their applications.
The deadline for regular decision applications is normally between Jan. 1 and Feb. 1, depending on the college. Meanwhile, many are also searching for scholarship opportunities to alleviate the hefty tuition costs.
“It’s very stressful and um you have a lot of decisions and a lot of them are impacting the rest of your life,” said Makenzie Van Beber, a senior at Temple High School.
Guidance counselors have seen a rise in the number of students seeking assistance since vacation ended. Many students are primarily concerned about the essay portion of the application.
“They want the college essay to reflect the things they couldn’t find on paper about a student. What have you been involved in? What volunteer work have you done? What are those extra avenues that make you different than that same student that looks exactly like you on paper,” said Amy Contrucci, Guidance Counselor for Temple High School.
Guidance counselors say that while the pressure may seem daunting, it is important to remain calm.
“Do it one step at a time,” said Contrucci.
