During the holiday season, more than 8,000 wreaths were placed at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery as part of the annual Wreath Project.

The community came together to prepare and lay wreaths at each headstone in memory and honor of those laid to rest.

City of Killeen officials shared volunteers are now needed to help pick up those wreaths.

"What we do at this event is we pick up all of the wreaths. There are more than 8,000 that have laid on graves since November, and we will take the wreaths, take the bows off and prepare them to be stored on trucks until next Wreath Project," said Hilary Shine, executive director of communications for the City of Killeen.

Wreath retrieval will begin at 3 p.m. on Saturday at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery, and Shine shared participants are advised to anticipate traffic and arrive early.

Event parking will be available at the cemetery and by the park and ride system from A&M Central Texas.
