MILWAUKEE, WI (WTMJ/CNN) - A Wisconsin bus driver is being honored for rescuing a baby found alone on a freeway overpass just before Christmas.

Irena Ivic is a driver for the Milwaukee County Transit System.

She was driving her route on the morning of Dec. 22 when she spotted the child, who was barefoot and wearing a onesie and diaper.

So, she stopped the bus and got the child.

"I have two lovely children and I am a human being and I find the child upset, and if I had the same situation again, I will, of course, again get help. That baby was so scared and cried, and he didn't know what to do, where to go. And when I saw him, I pulled over my bus and immediately picked up him," said Ivic.

Ivic brought the baby to the bus, where a passenger offered her coat to the child to keep warm.

Police soon arrived and eventually reunited the baby with her father.

Authorities believe the baby was left alone by her mother, who may have been experiencing a mental health issue.

Ivic was presented Thursday with an award by county officials for her act of kindness.
