SACRAMENTO, CA (KOVR/CNN) - A California Highway Patrol officer helped deliver a baby in an SUV Monday.

Officer Jeff Lloyd was finishing a traffic stop on a Highway 99 off-ramp when an SUV stopped behind him.

The passenger said she was in labor and about to give birth.

Officer Lloyd got medical equipment from his vehicle, told dispatch about the situation and then helped her deliver her baby.

The father of three says he was shocked by the situation but did his best to call on his training.

"At the academy during the medical training we get information and training on how to deliver a baby but it's one of those things you like 'I don't know if I’ll ever have to use this.' Luckily, I guess some common sense and just smart thinking came in," said Officer Lloyd.

Officer Lloyd stayed with her until medics arrived.

The mother and newborn baby girl were taken to a hospital.

At last check, both were doing well and resting.
