Edible, medicinal and otherwise useful plants are sprouting up all around Central Texas. A budding interest in foraging is picking up steam.

Chefs and naturalists are heading outdoors to search for green ingredients.

“We have a big salad growing right here in the yard,” said Tracy McLoud, owner of Terra Living.

Foraging is apart of a growing movement toward sustainable living.

McLoud demonstrated how common plants can be used at a Belton front yard. Henbit grew plentifully. A part of the mint family, the plant can be used in teas, salads or smoothies. It is high in iron, fiber and other vitamins.

Growing nearby is shepherd’s purse, a dainty wildflower that may be easily overlooked. It has many uses, but best known for its medicinal properties to stop bleeding.

“Before I harvest, I always observe and make sure there is an abundance of a plant,” said McLoud.

Foraging responsibly is key. Take only what you need, and leave the rest for wildlife who also rely on plants.

Before foraging, check to see if any chemical fertilizers or pesticides were used. These areas are not fit for food to be consumed.
