Students at Belton New Tech High @ Waskow completed over a dozen community service projects on Monday during the third annual Purple Heart Servant Leadership Day.

Brooke Bumpass said community service is a big deal for her.

"Community service is something that I do every Sunday, and sometimes I'm in like Key Club. So sometimes I join them and I work with some services with them," Bumpass said.

The freshman was glad to get the chance to do what she loved while at school.

"Today we are cleaning up a person's house... and us cleaning up her house shows that we actually appreciate our neighborhood and that we would like everyone to be welcomed," said Bumpass.

It was all a part of Purple Heart Servant Leadership Day.

"We are honoring our school's namesake Henry T.  Waskow. He was a Belton native, served in World War II. Died in World War II, but he really believed in community service and helping others," said Principal Ben Smith.

In partnership with United Way of Central Texas, students participated in more than a dozen community service projects across the district.

"We have students packing, packaging food that they're going to go to local shelters. We've got students baking cookies for our police stations and fire stations. We've got socks being made for the senior homes. We've got three groups that are doing clean up projects across the community," said Smith.

"We work very closely with them, with the children and with the students, to make sure that they understand the sacrifices that were made for them to be able to come out and do stuff like this," said Earl Williams, Purple Heart Recipient who participated in the event.

Bumpass was not the only student who took pride in giving back.

"It's absolutely fantastic. This is one of my favorite things. Allowing our students to have time to give back to their community is amazing," said Ruth Lawson, senior at Belton New Tech High @ Waskow.

"Even if we do it during school, it still shows that we appreciate other people," said Bumpass.

Today marked the school's third annual Purple Heart Servant Leadership Day, and four years ago Belton New Tech High @ Waskow was named a Purple Heart School.

Belton New Tech High @ Waskow students have to serve at least 10 hours of community service, and today's projects went toward that credit.
