ATHENS, TX (KLTV) - Athens Independent School District trustees have voted to institute a four-day school week next year.

The school board approved the measure during a Friday meeting.

Prior to the meeting, Board President Rob Risko discussed the move, saying trustees felt a four-day work week would improve teacher retention.

“The Athens ISD Board of Trustees is committed to serving the educational needs of our students by hiring and retaining teachers of exceptional quality,” Risko said. “We believe that the proposed four-day academic week will uniquely allow our district to accomplish this goal since the best teachers are vital to learning.”

Under the plan, students would begin the 2019-2020 school year on Aug. 5, with the last day of instruction being May 28.

Communications Coordinator Tony Clay says school will be Monday through Thursday beginning next school year, 2019-20.
