Possible wintry weather coming into Central Texas Thursday

The storm system that is moving toward the area is very rare here in Texas.

We usually have well-developed systems move across the region, but this one will rapidly strengthen right over Central Texas.

This leads to problems in the forecast since the computer models don't know how to exactly handle this situation since it is so rare. That leads us to say this...the forecast might change one way or another rapidly Thursday evening into Friday morning.

A few degrees cooler or warmer above the surface will determine if we see all rain, rain-snow mix, or all snow.

Right now it appears that areas west of a Hamilton to Lampasas line will have the best chance to see some slushy snow accumulations on elevated and grassy surfaces Thursday evening through Friday morning.

Temperatures will likely be at or above freezing at the surface, so major road problems aren't expected.

However, winds gusting up to 45mph could blow the snow around from time to time. Closer to I-35, rain or a rain-snow mix is possible Thursday night into Friday morning.

At this time, no accumulations are expected in Waco/Temple/Killeen. As stated above, if it gets colder than currently forecast, this could change. Areas east of I-35 will likely stay all cold rain.

Rain and/or snow will taper off Friday, but the clouds should remain. With gusty northwest winds continuing and temperatures staying in the 40s, it will be a cold day!
