Magnolia Foundation has generously kicked off Giving Tuesday with a donation to local non-profit, The Cove.
This gift marks The Cove’s largest single gift ever received.
The non-profit is an after-school support center for students experiencing homelessness. The Magnolia Foundation donation will support the housing solutions project.
Denise Anderson was homeless herself when she was in high school and college. Now, graduated from college and working as a paralegal.
"I have been in domestic abuse shelters," Anderson said. "I know I have slept on couches and floors of their houses and their parent's houses."
"A lot of the reason why I made it as far as I did was that I did have a certain select few people who stepped in," Anderson said.
Places like The Cove strive to bring a safe place for Waco High School students since they opened their doors three years ago.
"And that first year we served 61 students, and again these are high school students who've experienced homelessness," Kelly Atkinson, Executive Director of The Cove said. "The next year we saw a 25 percent increase."
In the 2017-18 school year, more than 300 WISD students experienced some form of homelessness. The Cove is working to create a shelter for those students in need.
"Right now we have safe after-school shelter for students Monday-Thursday but our students do have needs overnight," Atkinson said.
And with the donation from the Magnolia Foundation, more students will soon be given the care they need.
"We're able to start thinking and dreaming about housing solutions and especially emergency housing solutions who really would be on the streets," Atkinson said.
The Cove is still asking for the support of the Waco community to donate as well as cover overall costs associated with providing a safe space for students.
They have a goal of $200,000.
