On Tuesday, the City of Waco hosted a park dedication ceremony honoring a late councilman.

East Waco Park is now called Wilbert Austin Sr. Park. The reverend who died last year served as a councilman for the city of Waco for 11 years.

He represented the area where the park is located and advocated for improvements to it.

Austin's son who attended the ceremony was delighted to see their loved one received recognition for his service.

"Words can't express how I feel today. I woke up this morning, thinking about my dad and how honored he would be. It makes me want to honor him even more and try to help people as he did because I know this is a legacy he left for us to do," Wilbert Austin Jr. said.

The park also underwent renovations this summer, including an upgrade to the sports court, drainage improvements and lighting.

The $340,000 project was funded by a Federal Community Development Block Grant.
