A Central Texas church is honoring veterans in a special service and dinner.

Northside Baptist Church in Nolanville honored all veterans Sunday in a special service and dinner.

As well as paying tribute to all service men and women, the church honored one individual in particular, Sergeant Roy Johnson. In his time of duty, he received two Silver Stars and Purple Hearts, a bronze star with valor and the army commendation medal.

Johnson started as working as a medical aide and because of his previous time working in the hospital that's where he thought he would be working during the Vietnam War. His orders sent him elsewhere.

"4th Battalion the Old Guard," Johnson said. "I said this is not a hospital. All he said was good eyes flick. So I went."

During his time served in Vietnam war is wen he would be awarded his two Silver Stars. The third highest honor to be given. HIs fellow soldiers took note of his bravery and couldn't believe what he's done.

"After receiving my first Silver Star a friend of mine turned to me and he asked me how do I do it and I said I don't know when they call I just go." Johnson said.

Pastor Adam Garber is thankful that he can be in the presence of what some call an American Hero at his church today.

"It's our duty to honor our veterans they serve us willingly," Garber said. "So its just recognizing folks for their service it means the world to these men and women."

Johnson has been through the worst and best of times during his service in Vietnam and he wouldn't change it for the world.

"I would go with each and every one of them again," Johnson said. "They mean pretty much everything to me, it's a community it's a way of life."

Johnson served his time in Vietnam voluntarily and after 20 years of service, he retired in 2004.
