WACO, Texas (AP) - Jaylyn Patterson had 23 points, including a 3-pointer with 21 seconds left as Texas Southern used a late rally to upset Baylor 72-69 in the season opener for both teams Tuesday night.

Patterson's shot from the left wing was part of a game-ending 34-14 run over the final 14 minutes, and put Texas Southern ahead for the first time since the opening five minutes of Johnny Jones' first game as the Tigers coach. Patterson, a grad transfer from LSU, added two free throws in the closing seconds.

King McClure had 23 points for the new-look Bears, but his potential tying 3-point try as time ran out appeared to be deflected and came well short.

Baylor had never lost to a SWAC team in 56 previous games, and had been 11-0 against Texas Southern.

McClure is the lone returning senior and one of only three returning lettermen for the Bears. They have nine newcomers, but their two Division I transfers missed the opener. Graduate transfer Makai Mason didn't play because of a right ankle sprain, and Mario Kegler will miss the first six games for a violation of unspecified team rules.

Trayvon Reed had 15 points and 12 rebounds for Texas Southern. Devocio Butler had 13 points and Jeremy Combs 11.

Tristan Clark had 11 points for Baylor, while Mark Vital and Devonte Bandoo each scored 10.

BIG PICTURE

Texas Southern: Texas Southern, which last season got its first NCAA Tournament victory, has been an NCAA Tournament team four of the past five seasons as the SWAC tournament champion.

Baylor: The Bears had won their previous 46 consecutive regular season non-conference home games against unranked opponents. They were only 3-of-11 on free throws.

Baylor plays its next two games against SWAC schools, with a game Saturday against Southern and next Monday against Prairie View. The first non-SWAC team they play is Nicholls State on Nov. 16.
