Two people are dead after officials say they were hit by a car while they attempted to put gas into a car stranded on the side of the road.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said the accident happened south of College Station on Highway 6 near FM 159 after 10 p.m. on Friday.

DPS said that a Ford Escape, driven by Madora Swist, 32, was stranded on the northbound shoulder of SH 6. A Chevy, driven by Charles Swist, 65, pulled up behind the Ford and activated their hazard lights. While the two tried to add gas to the Ford, they were hit by a Nissan car, driven by Brandon Bowers, 33.

Madora and Charles were pronounced dead at the scene. Three children that were in the Ford at the time were not injured and were released to a family member.

The crash remains under investigation.
