HOUSTON (AP) - Democrat Lizzie Pannill Fletcher is trying to topple longtime Rep. John Culberson in a wealthy Houston district that has been Republican-controlled for 50-plus years.
But the district also narrowly chose Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump in 2016.
Suburban women around the country disillusioned with Trump have buoyed Democrats. Fletcher has highlighted her Planned Parenthood and glass-ceiling-breaker activism, so the race could test how far women angry at Trump will go in embracing a candidate they might otherwise shun.
Fletcher says it's a test she'll pass. She says her background makes her popular among Democrats and party-switching Republicans.
But Culberson says such a reliably red area won't endorse his opponent's "left-wing agenda," no matter who is in the White House.
