Immigrants refuse aid for fear it will doom green card hopes

NEW YORK (AP) - Immigrants and their advocates are scrambling to figure out what it would mean if the Trump administration adopts a rule that would reject many more people for green cards if they ever received government assistance.

The proposal has to do with whether an immigrant is considered dependent on the government. That's been a reason someone could be denied permanent legal residency.

Until now, the guidelines referred to people primarily dependent on cash assistance or government support for long-term institutionalization. But the Department of Homeland Security wants to include food aid, Medicaid, housing assistance or subsidies for Medicare Part D.

Some immigrants say they have avoided accepting aid for fear that it would doom their hopes of staying in the U.S. legally.
