Members of the of the Military Order of the Purple Heart were on hand during Monday’s Bell County Commissioner’s Court meeting to officially recognized Bell County as a Purple Heart County.

The Military Order of the Purple Heart presented a sign to be placed in the county stating that Bell County is a Purple Heart County. A proclamation honoring Purple Heart recipients was read in response to the county receiving the designation.

Tracey Brown Greene, who lives in Harker Heights, was one of the members of the Military Order of the Purple Heart who came to the meeting.

"To actually see it and 44 other counties before this one, for this one to be 45, it’s been a long time coming," Greene said. "It’s great for it to actually be done now."

With its strong ties to the military, county leaders are proud to receive the designation.

"It certainly seemed appropriate for Bell County, with our strong military presence and the large number of purple heart recipients we have here for us to join in on this," said Jon Burrows, a judge in Bell County.

Bell County is the 45th county in Texas with the Purple Heart designation and joins McLennan county, who received the designation back in July.
