Killeen ISD said that a fire in the boy's bathroom of East Ward Elementary has prompted students to have classes in the gym and portable classrooms as a precaution on Tuesday.
The fire department arrived on the scene around 2 p.m. It appeared that a fire started in the trash can of the 5th-grade boy's bathroom. The fire was put out immediately. However, students have not returned to the school because of the smoke.
At this time, they do not know the cause of the fire. There were no injuries and a voice message will be sent to parents.
The cause of the fire is under investigation and disciplinary consequences outlined in the student code of conduct and state law will be adhered to as warranted.
