A former Killeen elementary school teacher has been sentenced to 40 years in prison on Monday.

According to the Bell County District Attorney’s Office, 42-year-old Thomas Cannon was charged with indecency with a child by contact. He received the maximum sentence allowable by law.

Two of the cases involved one or more counts of aggravated sexual assault.

In May 2017, Cannon, a teacher at Iduma Elementary, had inappropriate contact with a student. He was then removed from the classroom and prohibited from returning until an investigation was completed, according to the Killeen ISD Superintendent Dr. John Craft.

In the investigation, a juvenile had disclosed that Cannon had inappropriate physical contact with them.

The District Attorney’s Office put out a statement on Cannon’s sentencing:

The District Attorney's office would like to thank the Killeen Police Department, the Children's Advocacy Center of Central Texas, Scott and White forensic nurse examiners, and the Texas Department of Public Safety Laboratory for their hard work and commitment to this investigation leading to a successful outcome.
