The Killeen-Fort Hood Regional Airport received a nearly $5 million grant.

Theodore Dewitt said he has flown back and forth from the Killeen-Fort Hood Regional Airport multiple times within the last few weeks.

“I have used this airport on four or five occasions,” said Dewitt.

He likes the airport but wishes they would expand.

“I think the fact that two airlines operate out of here sometimes is an inconvenience but other than that the airport is very efficient,” said Dewitt.

In November 2017, Delta Airlines announced that they would no longer fly out of the airport. However, the airport recently received a grant that may help with the business.

Given by the Federal Aviation Administration, the grant is nearly $5 million.

“It will be for the procurement of four new boarding bridges, rehabilitation of two of our existing passengers boarding bridges as well as all the infrastructure work that’s going to be done to the terminal and the apron under those bridges. So, there’s a lot involved in the project,” said Matthew Van Valkenburgh, Director of Aviation for the City of Killeen.

Valkenburgh said the airport staff partnered with the airlines to design the project.

“We’ll have enhancements in the bridges specifically for the airlines that will help make their operations easier and more efficient also,” said Valkenburgh.

In the end, he said the changes will benefit everyone.

“Drives our cost down which is a good thing. It makes our maintenance staff more efficient and it provides for a better environment for the traveling customer as they come throughout the terminal,” said Valkenburgh.

Airport officials say the project should be complete by the end of summer 2019.
