Students in Waco ISD can now ride the Waco Transit System buses for free just by showing their ID.

Waco ISD announced Friday that students could ride fixed-route buses for free by showing their student ID.

The partnership between the system and district was approved by the city council and school board on Tuesday.

“Some of our families have limited access to transportation, and that can keep our students from taking full advantage of the opportunities available to them. With free access to city buses, our students now have more options to get home from extra-curricular activities, to get to Saturday tutorials, or to get to a part-time job. The opportunities that this opens up are as expansive as Waco Transit’s bus routes," said Dr. Marcus Nelson, superintendent.

The district will pay $15,000 per year for the next three years for students to have free access.

This will not replace school bus services.
