REEVES COUNTY, TX (KWES) -

US Highway 285 is set for more than $100 M in improvements over the next several years.

The highway which spans from south of Fort Stockton all the way through the New Mexico state line is an often-used route for commercial vehicles traveling between Odessa/Midland to Kermit/Wing.

Statistics from TxDOT show that the Texas-side of the highway has seen an increase in fatal accidents in each of the last 8 years.

Since 2017, the agency has been taking action to improve the safety and conditions of the highway.

A series of projects are adding passing lanes and rehabilitating the roadway.

Scheduling and pricing for the US highway 285 projects are as follows -

  1. A $12.5 M project already under construction will span from RM 652 to CR 232, though passing lanes will not be added until 2019 at a cost of $8.5 M.
  2.  A $15 M project is also under construction and will span from CR 232 to Hwy 302, scheduled to take 19 moths to complete.
  3.  A $32 M project will span from RM 652 to New Mexico state line, scheduled to start this summer and will take 28 months.
  4.  A $31.6 M project will span from Hwy 302 to FM 1216,  scheduled to start this summer and will take 28 months.
