Volunteer fire departments in Bell County have applied for an almost $556,500 grant to cover the cost of new radios.

On Monday, the Bell County Commissioner's Court agreed to pay over $55,000 to cover the 10 percent cost match needed for the grant to be approved.

The court said they are happy to help the volunteer heroes. They said the new radios are necessary to be up to date with industry standards.

"Anything we can do to help them to respond to the accurate location, to be able to communicate with each other, to be able to tell someone else whether or not they need help or not on that, I think is very important," Judge Burrows, Bell County Judge, said.

The grant is now in the next step of the approval process with FEMA.

The volunteer firefighters should find out if the grant is approved within the next 30 days.
