Santa Fe ISD accepts donation of 8 AR-15s for internal police department

The Houston Chronicle reported that the Santa Fe ISD trustees voted to accept a donation of eight AR-15s, rifle optics, rental fees for the Texas City Municipal Rifle Range, tuition for a shooting course and as much as $4,800 worth of ammunition to the internal police department. 

The donation has an estimated value of $20,220 and was offered by a group of community members. 

This comes after a shooting at the high school left 10 dead and 13 injured n May. It was the third school shooting of the week in the United States and came a day ahead of what was supposed to be graduation ceremonies at Santa Fe High.

The suspect, 17-year-old Dimitrios Pagourtzis, was charged with multiple counts of capital murder.

Santa Fe ISD Police Chief Walter Braun told the Houston Chronicle that the AR-15s would be custom built for officers' patrols.
