A train that was heading to Riesel carrying coal was derailed on Monday.

According to the Union Pacific Railroad, 10 cars that were carrying coal derailed just outside of Waco. The train originated in Wyoming and was destined for Riesel.

UP have worked overnight to clear the railcars from the tracks. On Tuesday morning, the crews were working to fix the damage caused to the tracks.

UP says they were able to clean and repair the track and train traffic resumed around 9 a.m. They have secured the spilled coal so there won't be any runoff, but it will take some time to get everything cleaned up.

They estimate the clean up to take a few weeks.

The cause of the derailing is under investigation, but preliminary indications show the cause as a shifted track due to an unstable ballast rock.
