With the extensive heat warning being issued by the National Weather Service, the Bell County Sheriff's Office will have three cooling centers open on Friday.

Temperatures are expected to soar in Central Texas, with highs expected to reach 109 degrees, breaking the record of 104 degrees set in 2004.

According to the Belton Fire Department, the Bell County Office of Emergency Management, the Bell County Medical Reservists and the Bell County Sheriff’s Office worked together to open a cooling center at 104 S. Main Street in Belton.

The center will be a cool, air-conditioned place for the elderly and those with heat-sensitive health issues can go to if they do not have air conditioning in their home.

The cooling center is set to open between 9 a.m. through 8 p.m. daily. Water bottles will be provided in the center as well.

It will be open until the excessive heat warning is lifted.

The Temple Library will also be open as a cooling center during hours of operation:

  • Monday through Thursday: 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Friday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Saturday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Sunday: 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.

In Harker Heights, the Recreation Center has been designated as a cooling center at 307 Miller's Crossing from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The Library at 400 Indian Trail will also be open during hours of operations:

  • Monday through Thursday: 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Friday through Saturday: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
