Coach Don Hyde can't instruct his players during a 7-on-7 tournament, but he knows how valuable they can be.

"We had a quarterback leave that started over 40 games for us," said the first year head coach.

Jamal Williams was a do-everything force for the Pirates, but with him gone, La Vega is searching for his replacement.

"We have a pair that are pretty good, but they just don't have experience. We're going to have some growing pains."

That emphasis on experience has trickled down to the rest of the team. Like seniors Donta Stuart and Jared Rogers on defense. The two have started a majority of their careers at La Vega and while they see 7-on-7 as fun. They know it's just leading to the bigger picture.

"You know if someone's doing something wrong we get another week to fix it before the season starts so we can get ready for the real state," said Rogers.

La Vega will play Bonham in their first game June 28 at 1 p.m. in College Station.
