"Last year we were supposed to win, but it didn't turn out that way so we've been working hard to get it this year."

That's how Mexia senior running back Jadrian Smith described the team's attitude toward the state 7-on-7 tournament.

To say the Blackcats want to make a statement, wouldn't quite do them justice.

"This is another opportunity for us to come back this year and show everyone that we can be great again," said senior wideout Gary McQuirter.

Mexia has been practicing nearly every day leading up to the June 28 tournament. Now, they just have a road trip to College Station before their first game.

"We're coming back to win it for sure."

The first opponent in their way? Worthing (Houston) who they'll face at 2 p.m. in Aggieland.
