Some of Waco's City Council members along with representatives from the Texas Hunger Initiative discussed plans to apply for the Champs Grant on Wednesday.

The Champs Grant is funded by the Walmart Foundation and is given to cities to help with after-school and summer lunch programs.

Council members discussed using the grant to buy equipment needed to support the program. They also discussed providing transportation to people who cannot get to one of the 42 free lunch sites in Waco.

Other ideas that were mentioned included adding adults to the lunch program, which is now for those 18-years-old and younger.

According to the Texas Hunger Initiative, there are 25,000 children in Waco that qualify for the free lunch program in Waco ISD.

If awarded the grant, the city stands to gain between $100,000 - $125,000 to assist its efforts in reducing hunger among children in Waco.

The due date for the grant application is June 28.

"We want to make sure that we are identifying some key things that are important to our community, some things that support some of the partners that we have that are working on this hunger infinitive throughout our community," Waco Assistant City Manager Deidra Emerson said.
