For Melba and John Wesley surviving breast and prostate cancer was just the beginning.

Now, with a renewed perspective for living a healthy lifestyle, the couple and their daughters decided to fill a need in their neighborhood.

"We wanted to do something to make a difference, so as a family we decided to come up with the farmer's market," said Donna Nickerson, the Wesley's oldest daughter.

A farmer's market is something they say East Waco needs.

From their market on the 900 block of Houston Street, they sell potatoes, peppers, tomatoes and much more. Their food is all organic, and almost all of it is grown by the Wesley family.

"They love gardening as a family. We love gardening as a family. We put our heads together and decided to come up with, 'Da' Shack,'" Nickerson said.

Da' Shack farmer's market has been open for three years, but most of their business comes sporadically.

Next week, the Wesley family will have a much-belated grand opening planned that they hope will bring more people in to buy their produce.

The health conscience family also provides cooking classes and healthy recipes for anyone who wants to drop by and learn more about living a healthy lifestyle.

"We are trying to educate the community on how to eat better, how to grow their own food, make better food selection choices, and also help them learn how to garden," Nickerson said.
