FREESTONE COUNTY, TX (KXXV) -

A memorial stone honoring fallen Trooper Damon Allen was placed outside the Freestone County Courthouse on Wednesday.

A group called "We the People of The State of Texas" spearheaded the effort to add the marker.

Allen was shot and killed on Thanksgiving day while conducting a traffic stop. The suspect fled the scene prompting a state-wide search.

The memorial stone was unveiled by the Department of Public Safety during a ceremony.

The Department of Public Safety Director Steve McCraw said last November was the worst month for him because he lost two troopers.

"For the rest of my life, and the rest of the Department of Public Safety. Thanksgiving will be known as the Damon Allen Day. He sacrificed his life for his state and to protect others," McCraw said.

Allen's wife, Kasey, attended the heartfelt ceremony in Fairfield.

"It's a permanent reminder of his sacrifice. A permanent reminder of all of these firefighters law enforcement and officers that have sacrificed their lives in the past," Kasey Allen said.

She added the marker will allow members of the public to never forget him.

"As person who was willing to protect the public, as a good man, an outstanding man, a very dedicated man," Allen said.

His commitment didn't go unnoticed and will always be honored in the area he used to serve.

"I was always very proud of him. I always will be," Allen said.

Dallas Police also gave Allen's widow a plaque the department received when its running team completed a 150 mile run from Philadelphia to Washington D.C. in his honor.

On Thursday, another memorial stone will be unveiled in honor of fallen trooper Thomas Nipper who died in the line of duty last November.

The memorial stands next to a memorial for firefighters.
