Bellmead Fire Chief William Hlavenka said someone burning brush or trash caused a grass fire that spread to a stack of tires in a neighborhood north of Baylor University.

The Bellmead Fire Department responded to the 500 block of Matthews Street in Waco around 2 p.m.

Chief Hlavenka said there was a big column of black smoke when they arrived.

The Lacy-Lakeview Volunteer Fire Department, Bellmead Fire Department, Waco Fire Department and Elm Mott Fire Department also showed up to help.

They worked together to put out multiple hot spots within the wooded area.

Hlavenka said some homes and structures were threatened at one point, but no one was evacuated.

"Be very cautious of what you do with burning," Hlavenka said. "Even barbecuing because you could go out and not really think about it, throw your ashes out somewhere and potentially something like this could happen if you're in an area, like this, that's heavily wooded."

East Texas Medical Center EMS and the Heart of Texas Fire Corps were also on scene treating firefighters for heat exhaustion.

Encore and Atmos were called out to check on nearby power lines.

No injuries were reported.
