The grave sites at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen are decorated for Memorial Day weekend.

Hundreds of people, including veterans, active duty soldiers, Boy Scouts and families volunteered this morning to place American flags at all of the grave sites in the cemetery.

The 8,500 flags will stay up all weekend.

Some who volunteered their time said they couldn't imagine starting the weekend any other way.

"I told my husband this morning the least we can do for these vets that gave their lives for us is to come out and put flags on their graves for giving the ultimate sacrifice... and I wanted to bring my kids out here to show them and remind them what Memorial Day is all about," Brittany Maxwell, a volunteer with Heart on a Mission, said.

The flags will be collected on Tuesday and volunteers are needed.
