What do you get when you combine dogs, kittens and tree decorations? A creative way to celebrate Memorial Day and honor the soldiers and veterans of Fort Hood.

Today the Killeen Animal Shelter partnered with the Killeen Animal Alliance to decorate a tree for those who have served at Fort Hood.

The Killeen Animal Alliance was founded a little over a year ago with a mission to save as many animals as possible. They approached the city council about improvements to the Killeen shelter and got a unanimous vote of approval.

Mayor Segarra and Councilwoman Shirley Fleming joined soldiers in decorating and visiting with the animals housed at the shelter.

The Killeen Animal Alliance said they try to put up a tree at least once a month including a Disney themed tree they put up before this one. They said they were excited to do this one for the soldiers.

The Killeen Animal Alliance is working to change the Killeen shelter to a no-kill shelter and said right now the shelter has a lot of animals in need of a new home.
